Intraocular Lenses

Intraocular Lenses
Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are artificial lenses implanted inside the eye to correct vision.
When is Intraocular Lens Implantation Indicated?
• Cataract: Clouding of the lens, leading to a decrease in visual acuity.
• High degree of myopia or hyperopia: When other vision correction methods do not provide effective results.
• Astigmatism: To correct complex refractive errors.
• Age-related vision changes (presbyopia): Intraocular lenses help restore vision at both near and far distances.
Types of intraocular lenses
There are several types of IOLs, each of which solves specific problems to achieve better vision:
Monofocal lenses: The optical power of monofocal intraocular lenses is selected individually for each patient depending on their needs. Such lenses have one focus, that is, the highest visual characteristics are achieved at near or far distances. To achieve high-quality vision at other distances, the patient will need glasses.
For example, if a person's professional activities and leisure activities are not related to fine work at close distances, a monofocal intraocular lens is chosen for good distance vision. In the absence of other eye conditions, the patient will be able to enjoy nature, easily distinguish the number of public transport, and feel comfortable performing household or gardening tasks. However, for reading, crafting, or working on the computer, they will need glasses.
Multifocal (or Bifocal) lenses: These are high-tech lenses used in cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange to correct age-related vision changes (presbyopia) and provide clear vision at different distances. Multifocal IOLs allow patients to see well both up close and at a distance, completely eliminating the need for glasses.
Toric lenses: These are designed to correct astigmatism, a condition where the cornea has an irregular (asymmetric) shape, causing the image to focus on multiple points on the retina, resulting in blurred vision. They provide monofocal correction: they can be adjusted to improve vision either at a distance or up close. Toric IOLs have a special shape and markings that allow the surgeon to precisely position the lens in the eye to correct astigmatism. This design helps correct blurred vision caused by the uneven shape of the cornea.
Accommodative lenses: These are a special type of intraocular lenses that mimic the eye's natural accommodation ability — its capacity to change focus at different distances. This is achieved through a unique lens design and construction that responds to the contraction of the eye muscles, allowing the lens to adjust its position and provide clear vision both up close and at a distance.
Accommodative lenses are a great option for people who lead an active lifestyle and do not want to depend on glasses, as they provide easy switching between different focuses.
Advantages of intraocular lens implantation
• Improved quality of life: Vision becomes clearer and sharper, allowing patients to give up glasses and contact lenses.
• Long-lasting effect: IOL implantation provides long-term correction, eliminating the need for lens replacement.
• Minimal risks: Modern surgical techniques ensure a high level of safety and comfort.
• Quick recovery: Most patients return to their normal life within a few days after the surgery.
