Pterygium

Pterygium
Pterygium is a condition in which the conjunctiva grows onto the cornea, which can lead to decreased visual acuity or even loss of vision. Initially, pterygium is barely noticeable, but over time it can grow, causing redness, itching, and tearing. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to preventing serious complications.
Causes of pterygium
The main cause of pterygium is long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, especially when spending time outdoors, in sunny areas, or working in conditions where the eyes are exposed to high levels of solar radiation.
Treatment of pterygium
Conservative treatment of pterygium (eye drops, ointments) is aimed only at eliminating the symptoms of the disease and cannot stop the growth of the neoplasm. The only effective method of treating pterygium is its surgical removal.
However, there is a risk of recurrence, which is why additional transplantation of limbal cells is necessary to prevent regrowth. This method significantly reduces the likelihood of the condition returning.
